What a compassionate tribute to Dave from Robert McDonald who captured the essence of him so vividly. I met him at Shaker. I, like Robert, Greg Jacobs, David Schweitzer, and Alan Freed have the best memories of his beautiful tenor voice when we sang together in both the A Capella Choir and the Chanticleers. His wonderful voice was a reflection of his tender soul. He exhibited a gentle kindness that was exceptional for a young high school student. We reconnected after the 40th reunion for the Raise Your Voice Foundation for Mr. Ellis and he was enthusiastic about honouring our beloved Choir Director.  I am truly saddened by his loss that feels untimely for the void it leaves for his family and all of us who were fortunate enough to be in his sphere.

My dear Josh,

It is on the eve of our class' 50 plus 2 year reunion that I write to you about your extraordinary Mother. I have been searching for the correct words to capture the sorrow I feel for her loss. I was in correspondence with her toward the end of her life and she was expressive about this milestone event. I was so taken with her brave attitude in facing her diagnosis and truly prayed for her to make it.

I was also with her in A Capella Choir, Chanticleers, our junior musical, "The Boys from Syracuse" and the Red and White Revue. Most importantly she was one of my closest friends in High Schoo. I recall coming to her house where she played the piano, as Bonnie Horowitz so beautifully described, with amazing virtuosity being gifted with perfect pitch as well. She provided us on bus trips to other choir concerts the pitches we needed to replicate the fabulous classic repetoire we learned from Mr. Ellis or the contemporary songs of the Chanticleers.

She wrote to me of her pride and love for you, her beloved son. Please accept my understanding for such a devasting loss as a young man to lose your beautifully spirited, immensely talented and most devoted Mother.

On this anniversary of our high school graduation, she is foremost in my thoughts and I will have her particularly in my heart over the weekend where no doubt many of us who knew and loved her will remember her.

Vivi, what a beautiful picture of your family. Sorry not to see you at the reunion and compare notes about raising twins. Mine will be 35 at the end of this month. So sorry to hear about your husband. Fondly, Gay

Celebrating our 50 plus 2 year reunion from NYC. I have the most extraordinary and vivid memories of our high school years at the one and only SHHS. I regret I will not be in attendance but wish you all a fabulous time together. It will be especially meaningful as we turned 70 together this year. I attach a photo of my twin sons, Andrew, on the left and NIcholas on the right who will be 29 years old this August. They are the great joy of my life and I am grateful everyday for the wonderful life we lead.

Dear Nancy, It is wonderful to contact you after so many years. I found your comment here about choir so interesting because I, too, have such strong memories of our A Cappella experiences. Since the 40th reunion, I have been working with the development office at Shaker to establish a foundation in Mr. Ellis' honor. Could you please send me your email address to demasboys@aol.com so I can tell you more about it. I so look forward to reconnecting. Vivi
