According to my Mom, Laurie was my first friend. She told me Laurie’s Mom was the only woman she knew with a little girl, so we were playmates from the age of 2. Years later we would go to dancing school together, Sunday school together, and, of course home room together, me usually next to or behind her—Duber and Dubick.

Although Laurie moved to New Orleans when she married, we remained close and saw each other regularly. Some years ago Laurie sent me a quotation in the mail that she liked. This was before Maya Angelou became a household name. It was the now well known line,

“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Some years later, I was at Laurie’s, helping her prepare for a Sedar. She had me on place card duty, since my handwriting was better than my cooking. When I had finished I looked over and saw there was one place card, in a special frame, that said simply, “Special guest”.

I turned to her and asked, “Who’s the special guest?” She gave me one of her smiles and said, “You.”

And that was Laurie’s super power, making you feel you were special. When you were with her you felt that there was no place else she would rather be, and no one else she would rather be with.

I will miss that, and so much more, and will forever be grateful to our mothers.

Hi, I came into the site today and realized I had not updated my profile since my daughter was at Purdue. Since then she has worked for the Four Seasons, went back to school for an MBA and now lives in Madrid, Spain where she works for Amadeus, a technology company.
I closed the doors of Dubick & Associates last year, which gives me a chance to spend more time in Spain with Elizabeth, and travel. In December I visited Laurie Duber in New Orleans--she has four adorable grandchildren. I also get to see Jackie Goler often-- as her daughter and twin granddaughters live nearby in New Jersey--and Susie Rollins who comes in for theater and museums.
I'm looking forward to our reunion this summer and appreciate all the work being done by the planning committee!

Hi, Cindi Crane’s daughter has asked me where her
mom went to elementary school. Since Cindi and I met
in jr high I don’t know the answer....or can’t recall.
